10 questions with Jess Fitzgerald

Who is your favorite footballer or athlete of all time?

I would honestly say Cody Weightman. He’s so exciting to watch, he brings so much energy. It is the energy of the team. I watch him when he’s not near the ball, and he celebrates every goal like it’s his. I loved ‘Pendles’ (Scott Pendlebury) growing up, I’m a fan of Collingwood.

Who is the worst teammate on social media?

Ash Guest, 100 percent. She posts at random, and so too. Every day there is a post. I love him though. She has a setting where she posts the same photo on Instagram and Facebook, so I’ll see her on both. I love it, but honestly, too much.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a hairdresser. All I can do is a bun and a ponytail so I’m not sure why this was my dream job. Or, I wanted to be the first woman to play AFL, which was never going to happen. I wanted to be part of the Collingwood team, run with Pendles.

Who is your toughest opponent?

I would say probably Erin Phillips, or anyone in Adelaide’s midfield. She was so strong. I was mentally ready to lock in and play body to body, and it was like I was a fly on her shoulder that she had just blown. It was embarrassing, I knew this was going to be an “area for improvement” in my weekly tape. It was like, “know your place, Jess”.

In which Olympic sport would you like to compete?

Skateboarding is all the rage now. That’s all I’ve watched this year. I went to the shed and took out my old skateboard, which I don’t even think I would classify as a skateboard, it’s so old and the wheels are coming off. There were almost a few injuries.

Which teammate is most likely to continue and train?

Brooke Lochland, Guesty or ‘Blackers’ (Ellie Blackburn).

Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions?

Not really. I always wear two pairs of socks, so I wear a pair of socks and then my W sock. I always did, even while playing basketball. I think once my shoes were too big, so I put on two pairs, and since then I’ve done the same.

What was the first concert you attended?

Reece Mastin. Before, I wanted to be Reece Mastin. I organized a fancy dress party and I disguised myself as him. Do you know how he has that space between his two front teeth? My mom works at a dentist and gave me mold like her teeth, and I wore them for my birthday party. I hope I was still in elementary school, I think I was about nine years old.

What is the non-football accomplishment that you are most proud of?

Finish high school. I went to Maribyrnong College (a specialty sports school) and live in Bundoora so it was quite a hike to get there. I never complained about getting up, I was usually the only mom who woke up to take me to the station. Having this discipline at a young age, I’m quite proud of it.

Would you rather take the mark or the goal of the year?

I almost got the goal of the year (Fitzgerald was nominated in 2021). I think Goal of the Year, I’m a little too scared to take specs. I got a taste of what the goal of the year might be, and I liked it.
