Pain is a natural protective response of our body. The sensory trigger is there to let you know that something is wrong, something is coming from within, whether mild or severe. Gum disease, often known as periodontitis, is an inflammation of the gums. It causes inflammation, heating, redness and swelling of the gums. Gum disease can cause moderate to severe pain, and depending on the severity of the pain, you can tell how serious the infection is.
What to do: The first line of defense against gum disease is deep cleaning. Unlike a standard cleaning, which is usually done only above the gum line, a deep cleaning is done below the gum line. Your dentist will use special instruments to treat it.

What to do: Treatment will be determined by the cause of the sensitivity. Your dentist may recommend a fluoride gel, desensitizing toothpastea crown, inlay, bonding, gum graft or root canal surgery.
Damage to the surface of a tooth, or the enamel, is known as tooth decay. It happens when bacteria in your mouth produce acids that eat away at your tooth enamel. Tooth decay can cause cavities. If left untreated, tooth decay can lead to discomfort, infection and even tooth loss.
What to do: See a dentist if it gets worse. Other than that, you can brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste after eating or drinking, rinse your mouth often, or eat healthy food.
Bruxism is defined by the clenching and grinding of the teeth and can occur during sleep or wakefulness. Over time, it can cause tooth sensitivity, as well as tooth or facial pain.
What to do: Avoid grinding your teeth by reducing the stress in your life, adopting good sleeping habits or using a mouth guard to protect your teeth from grinding while you sleep.
