Smith + Nephew Expands Reach Of Its Cori Handheld Robotic System
A year after Smith + Nephew (NYSE: SNN) launched its Cori handheld robotic system in the United States, the orthosurgery system was launched globally.
The British medical tech giant has extended Cori’s reach to Europe, Australia and New Zealand, India and Canada (which was just announced today). The company said yesterday the system is now available for use by the UK’s National Health Service.
Smith + Nephew designed Cori to be smaller and faster than its previous Navio system. Cori, according to the company, is a compact, fully mobile offering with a 3D intraoperative imaging system and an advanced robotic sculpting tool. The surgeon uses a pointer tool to digitally âpaintâ on the bony surface that needs to be removed. The surgeon then uses a portable cutting tool with a robotic function that automatically stops the rotation of the tool’s burr if it is outside the painted area.
The company first launched the Cori Surgical System in 2020 in the United States after FDA clearance.
According to a press release, the robotic system gives surgeons a way to measure, plan and perform personalized knee surgery based on the individual anatomy of a patient in the operating room. The company presents its platform as more compact than alternative robotic systems, with minimal setup time and portability that optimize patient flow through surgical units as it can be moved from theater to theater. .
Dr Tim Parratt, consultant orthopedic surgeon at East Suffolk North Essex NHS Foundation Trust, and one of the first surgeons to use Cori in the UK, said in the statement that the Cori system disrupts staff as little as possible and presents advantages over a conventional kit.
