Surgeons restore the upper jaw of a mucormycosis survivor

Hyderabad: Specialists at LBR Dental and Implant Center, Madhapur, performed complex maxillofacial surgery to restore the upper jaw of a 55-year-old patient from Karimnagar.

The patient had lost his jawbone to mucormycosis after recovering from Covid and implant surgeons at the hospital used advanced dental implants including BioLine Zygomatic and Tubero Pterygoid to restore the jawbone and give the patient a fighting chance lead a normal life, according to a press release.

According to the doctors, the patient had recovered from Covid but had been infected with mucormycosis and after prolonged treatment had recovered from the fungal infection but had thus lost most of his upper jaw. This prevented him from chewing or swallowing food.

Chief Implant Surgeon, Dr. KA Reddy, Endodontist, Dr. Swapnil Pandey, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr. Rangnath Jawar led the Maxillofacial Surgery.

“This is the first time that such high-end implants have been used on a patient with mucormycosis who had no bone left. All of the surgery was performed under local anesthesia and the fixed teeth were replaced in three days,” Dr Reddy said. The patient can now live a normal life as it is a lifelong permanent treatment, the doctors added.
