If you are going to wear grids, pay attention to these tips to preserve your natural smile

When Missy Elliot hummed, “Why are you all in my grill? Can you pay my bills?“I can’t help but wonder if she was specifically referring to her dental expenses. These mouth ornaments have been around since ancient times, starting with the Etruscans who lived in Italy.

According to Joseph becke1999 study of r “Etruscan Gold Braces: Three Recently ‘Discovered’ Examples,” he discovered that these dental designs had existed since the 7th century BC and that wealthy Etruscan women popularized them. They saw a rebirth through the hip-hop community in the 1980s and 1990s with many music stars ranging from Paul Wall To nelly To Beyonce rocking dental decor.

The mouth is the entry point to your respiratory and digestive tracts – so care must be taken to ensure that they decide to lodge in this area. While aesthetics are appealing to some, it is not the best option for maintaining healthy teeth.

“Temporary grates can serve as a cavity-causing food trap if worn for long periods of time,” explains Dr Karthilde Appolon, DDS and part-time faculty member at Columbia University. If you still dream of golden grills, Appolon adds, “Food entrapment can cause cavities as well as periodontal disease.

Besides causing unnecessary dental work, constant wearing of a grill can change your bite and thus “change the way the teeth come together, which makes the bite uncomfortable,” says Dr. Appolon. Finally, you can choke on your grill: “if it loosens and dislodges, it can block the flow of the airways,” warns Dr. Appolon.

Some people opt for permanent gold crowns to look like a grill. Dr Appolon reminds us that “enamel can never be repelled or regenerated; therefore, one must be very meticulous when choosing to place gold crowns on healthy teeth. It can be done and Dr Appolon admits that they “can last a long time and work well if restored by a well-trained dentist.”

If you’re missing teeth or replacing an old crown, she adds that it might “even serve as a viable option.” Remember that this is a permanent and irreversible decision. If you still want to jump into this popular option and are considering investing in a pair of temporary grills, be sure to protect your teeth.

“Take it out and clean your teeth after every meal,” says Dr Appolon. If you don’t have a meal at home, bring a travel toothbrush and toothpaste to make sure you can keep up with your dental routine.

“Don’t sleep with it,” says Dr Appolon. Some people grind their teeth while they sleep, and grilling can damage your natural teeth. You can’t forget your natural teeth when wearing grills or risk damage that could cost more than the glittering dental ornament itself.
