Health experts encourage them to make a habit of brushing their teeth before going to bed.

According to Rosette Uwimbabazi, a dentist at Inkuru Nziza Orthopedic Hospital, going to bed without brushing your teeth means teeth will be covered in bacteria overnight.

Bacteria digest food scraps on the teeth and under the gums. This can lead to various diseases as well as other dangers to life. Going to bed without brushing your teeth can also cause tooth decay, tooth decay, and other gum disease.

Uwimbabazi therefore says that brushing your teeth before bed helps to remove bacteria and plaque in the mouth, thus eliminating the damage caused by the limited production of saliva.

“If you maintain a practice of brushing every night, it prevents the build-up of plaque in the long term. Plaque is the yellow substance that gets deposited in your teeth and makes them dirty. It can also lead to various other dental problems if not treated in a timely manner. Therefore, brushing at night can save you many expensive dental visits in the long run, ”she says.

She advises people to brush their teeth at least twice a day and if possible three times, reduce sugar intake, have regular dental check-ups at least twice a year, and maintain good brushing technique using fluoride toothpaste.

“Just like when you brush, the way you brush matters. Be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Brush all surfaces of your teeth (including your tongue) for at least two minutes in total. Follow your brushing session with dental floss and rinse with mouthwash if you want to go the extra mile for your smile or your breath, ”she explains.

She also points out that brushing before bedtime reduces or regulates what is called “morning breath”, which is caused by the foul odor produced by the bacteria. Cleaning your mouth before sleeping reduces the likelihood of having morning breath.

Uwimbabazi also advises people who engage in activities like smoking and consuming a lot of coffee to reduce them because it is not good for their teeth and mouth breath.

She notes that brushing before bedtime is crucial for everyone, including children.

“Anyone who can eat should practice dental hygiene, even young children or breastfed babies should be kept clean, with a good cloth or cotton wool,” she says.
